From lecture hall to office: Cato on her first months at Brackmann

Cato Everhardt started earlier this year as a legal assistant at Brackmann. Since then, she has been involved in case files, supporting the secretariat, and learning extensively on the job. We look back with Cato on her initial period: adjusting to the rhythm and moments when she thought, “Yes, this is where I belong.”

A new job, a new rhythm. What was it like to start at Brackmann?

“My first period at Brackmann was very positive. It’s my first time working in an office environment, so it took some getting used to. Fortunately, I was well supported from day one by Rebecca, Floor, and Lisanne. I really appreciate that the lawyers take time to discuss my work with me one-on-one — that’s where I learn the most.”

When did you realize you were really making a difference?

“It’s great to see that my research is taken seriously. As a legal assistant, you’re involved in the entire process from start to finish. When I see my input reflected in documents for clients or the court, I feel proud.”

What do you learn at Brackmann that you didn’t get from textbooks?

“In practice, things often work differently than how they’re described in books. Here, I’m encouraged to think creatively and outside the box, which helped me realize there are often multiple ways to solve a legal problem. Also, construction and procurement law weren’t part of my university studies; this broadening of my knowledge is very valuable to me.”

How would you describe the atmosphere at Brackmann?

“Dynamic! No two days are the same — which keeps things varied. Sometimes I’m out handling tasks, other days I’m deeply involved in a case. The atmosphere is open and supportive. The lawyers’ doors are always open for questions or a cup of coffee!”
